Heroin is a highly addictive drug processed from the naturally occurring substance morphine which is extracted from an Asian poppy seed plant. Heroin usually appears in the form of a white or brown powder, or a sticky black tar. Heroin is considered a depressant. Once it enters the body it affects the receptors in the brain dealing with pain and also affects the brain stem which is important for the automatic processes critical to life such as breathing and blood pressure. When a heroin user overdoses, it is typically because they are unable to breath due to the effects heroine has on the brain stem. Heroin is linked to most drug related deaths. Violence and crime are also linked to its use.
