Creating Gender-Responsive Services and A Woman's Way Through the 12-Steps Gender Matters: Creating Gender-Responsive Services While research and clinical experience indicate a high incidence of trauma and co-occurring disorders in women’s lives, administrators and counselors often struggle with the realities of providing effective, integrated, and trauma-informed treatment. This one-day training is designed to introduce the principles and process of developing trauma-informed services and provide a basic “How To.” Attendees will have an opportunity to do a self-assessment of their programs. The training will also focus on the three core things that both staff and clients need: an understanding of what trauma is, its process, and its impact on both the inner self (thoughts, feelings, beliefs, values) and the outer self (behavior and relationships, including parenting).

A Woman's Way Through the 12-Steps When Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) was founded in 1935, most—if not all—of the participants were men. Women’s use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs was hidden, along with the pervasiveness of domestic violence, incest, and other forms of abuse against women. In the past thirty years, however, we have developed a strong body of research about women’s lives and women’s addictions. We now know that about 30 percent of all addicts in the U.S. are women. Many women have entered recovery programs based on the Twelve Steps of AA, and we have discovered that women’s needs in recovery and their pathways to recovery differ in some significant ways from those of men. This one-day training discusses some of these gender differences and presents the new trauma-informed 12-Step program materials that are anchored by A Woman’s Way through the Twelve Steps, a book that has sold more than 250,000 copies.
