Alcohol Use and Pregnancy:
When a pregnant woman drinks beer, wine, or mixed drinks, so does her baby. Alcohol passes through the placenta right into the developing baby. The baby may suffer lifelong damage as a result. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) is the number one cause of birth defects in the United States and is 100 percent preventable. Learn more

Substance use disorder is the overuse or abuse of alcohol or other drugs. It is common and costly. It can cause or worsen many medical problems and can destroy families and lives. Abused substances produce forms of intoxication that alter judgment, perception, attention, or physical control. Learn more

While there are many tough issues when raising teens that can put fear in the heart of a parent, teen drug use might be the toughest. Parents cannot allow fear to force them to ignore drug concerns in their teen's life. Every teenager either knows someone who uses or has seen it in movies. It is up to the parent to inform their teen about the dangers of alcohol and other drugs, and to recognize when a teen might be using.

Aging:As women age, many mental and physical changes occur. Maintaining or beginning a healthy lifestyle will help you to stay active, healthy, and productive as you age. A healthy lifestyle can prevent or delay the onset of some health problems that are common in older women. Without a healthy lifestyle, the changes in aging can lead to alcohol or drug abuse. Learn more ![]() Domestic Violence:Domestic violence (also known as spousal abuse) is the use of intentional verbal, psychological, or physical force by one family member (including an intimate partner) to control another. Recognizing the warning signs and symptoms of spousal abuse is the first step, but taking action is the most important step in breaking free. Learn more ![]() Women Veterans:California has close to 167,000 women veterans—the largest number of female veterans of any other state. You represent about eight percent of California’s overall veteran population of almost 2.1 million. The Veterans Administration projects that the percentage of women veterans in California will increase from 8 to 11 percent of all California veterans in the next 10 years, and to 14 percent in the next 20 years (2030). As women veterans arrive home, California has the important responsibility to help them find the opportunities needed to fulfill their hopes and dreams.
