Technical Assistance and Training

The Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs (ADP) contracts with experts to provide technical assistance and training services to help reduce and prevent problems associated with alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) among the state's diverse populations. These services, provided free of charge to California agencies, organizations, community groups and individuals, focus on specific populations and subject areas, thus enabling a requestor to identify and utilize the most appropriate ATOD prevention, intervention, or treatment and recovery resources.

Services Provided

Technical assistance services may include workshops, speakers, literature, newsletters, sample documents, program development training and toll-free telephone help-lines. Interested organizations and individuals can obtain training and assistance via workshops, telephone or on-site consultation, referrals, and resource materials. Helping new and existing alcohol and other drug programs and mentor programs to improve services is a priority.

Technical Assistance by Subject Area or Population

The ADP technical assistance contractors assist in program development, reducing barriers and enhancing the cultural appropriateness of ATOD services, and increasing public awareness of the potential impact of drug and alcohol use. The contractors have extensive expertise in the ATOD field and can provide technical assistance regarding the following 13 specific subject areas and populations.

Technical Assistance and Training Resource Directory

This resource directory (PDF, 358 KB) provides a complete listing of technical assistance contractors currently funded by ADP. The services are listed by the 13 subject areas indicated above, noting that some contractors have multiple areas of expertise and may be able to provide TA services in various subject areas. The second section also lists federal and State-funded organizations that provide specific ATOD-related information, technical assistance, and/or training. These organizations are not funded by ADP and may or may not charge a fee for their services. Comments or needed changes to the information in the technical assistance directory listings should be addressed to Mary Asoo.

Getting Technical Assistance

Requests for information about obtaining technical assistance and training should be directed to the specific contracted organizations directly, depending on which population or subject area is appropriate to your needs. Complete contact information is available on the web pages linked to above or in the downloadable resource directory.
