Prevention
You are invited to attend the 22nd Annual National Prevention Network Prevention Research Conference, September 15-18, 2009 in Anaheim, California. The theme for this year’s conference is “Prevention Research: Striking Gold." The conference is dedicated to Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) prevention and focuses on prevention research findings and practical application; innovative approaches and emerging trends; and system partnerships, infrastructure, and policies.
This conference is a fantastic opportunity to increase your skills and knowledge in substance abuse prevention research. Workshop presentations will include a wide range of substantive topics such as underage drinking, prescription drugs, social marketing, public policy, alcohol industry advertising, culturally competent and relevant services, and more! Expand your vision and inspire your service as you hear from nationally recognized experts who are using research to obtain successful outcomes for prevention programming. You will also have the opportunity to network with leaders from the federal agencies supporting prevention, including Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration / Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, Office of National Drug Control Policy, National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and U.S. Department of Education, as well as prevention professionals from around the country.
Additionally, Continuing Education Units (CEUs) credit will be awarded from the University of Oklahoma, College of Continuing Education upon completion of the entire conference (17 clock hours equal to 1.7 CEUs). These CEUs are accepted for by the following certifying bodies: National Board of Certified Counselors, Oklahoma Drug & Alcohol Professional Counselors Association, and Texas Certification Board of Addiction Professionals.

Our goal in Prevention Services is to develop and maintain a comprehensive, statewide prevention system that averts and reduces alcohol and other drug-related problems, thereby improving the health, safety and economic conditions of California residents by:
- Modifying social norms and conditions to counter adverse consequences resulting from Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) availability, manufacturing, distribution, promotion, sale, and use.
- Effectively addressing at-risk and underserved populations and their environments.
To the left you will see navigation links that will enable you to access the resources and information necessary to accomplish the following tasks, among others:
- Learn about the many prevention programs happening throughout the state.
- Order free publications, CDs/DVDs, and other materials in the Resource Center.
- Access Prevention Activities Data System (PADS) data reports and learn about the new California Outcomes Measurement Service Prevention data system.
- Learn about the work of the Governor's Prevention Advisory Council.
- Review the various publications and fact sheets relating to ongoing prevention efforts.
